Great Ocean Walk Adventure

Experience Victoria’s Great Ocean Walk in Gunditjmara, Giraiwurung, and Gadubanud Country.

Join Big Heart Adventures for a 9 day adventure from Adelaide to Victoria’s south-west coast. Visiting Naracoorte Caves, the Coonawarra wine region, Mount Gambier’s sinkholes and kayaking on the Glenelg River on the way.

Walk pack-free along the full length of the Great Ocean Walk. Guided all the way from the seaside town of Apollo Bay to the majestic Twelve Apostles.

This is an all-inclusive experience with comfortable transport, tasty meals, great company and pre-departure training walks. So don’t worry about flights, you can keep your feet on the ground and see this gorgeous coastline from Adelaide with us.


Day 1 | Depart Adelaide / Caving / Kayaking / Nelson

We start our Great Ocean Walk adventure with an early start from Adelaide.

Sit back in our comfortable transport and enjoy the scenery. Take time get to know your fellow walkers and enjoy the journey as we cross the country side. Stopping in Keith, then onto Naracoorte Caves for an underground cave experience.

We pass through the Coonawarra wine region and a chance to purchase a fine cab sav or shiraz.

Then over the Victorian border via Mount Gambier and an exploration of a sinkhole. Arriving in Nelson, we venture on to the Glenelg River for a guided kayaking experience before booking in to our accommodation for the night.

Day 2 | Great Ocean Walk - Apollo Bay to Shelley Beach

After breakfast we drive to Apollo Bay. Apollo Bay is our starting point for the Great Ocean Walk.

We enjoy a casual lunch and then prepare for our walk. Todays walk meanders along coastline away from Apollo Bay and towards Shelley Beach. It is a comfortable afternoon walk with fine views of the Great Otway National Park.

Tonight, relax and enjoy a sumptuous 2 course dinner after a wonderful introduction to our first day of walking.

Day 3 | Great Ocean Walk - Shelley Beach to Cape Otway

Countryside, creeks, beach and inland forest trails await.

We walk through rainforest as we enter Great Otway National Park, with some beautiful climbs. Then wind our way onto beautiful Blanket Bay.  With just 10km of coastal bushland after lunch, we cover tidal crossings, soak up the views with our our days walk complete at Cape Otway Lighthouse.

Day 4 | Great Ocean Walk - Cape Otway to Castle Cove

Walking from Cape Otway today we complete another section of the Great Ocean Walk.

Stopping at gorgeous Aire River and encountering the stunning Mountain Ash trees, we have a good opportunity to spot wildlife today. Reaching our end point at Castle Cove we return to Cape Otway Lighthouse for our final night here.

Day 5 | Great Ocean Walk - Castle Cove to Milanesia Gate

It’s all about walking along amazing beaches today.

Admiring the incredible surf as we cover a tidal crossing on Johanna Beach. Then we head inland and uphill for more amazing views. We move to our accommodation in Port Campbell this evening for the next 3 nights.

Day 6 | Great Ocean Walk - Milanesia Gate to The Gables

A big day of walking and plenty of challenge today.

We cover distance and climbs from Milanesia Beach to Ryans Den. With amazing views, its then onto a coastal scrub trail with another tough section via Moonlight Head and finishing at the Gables Lookout.

Keeping an eye out for Southern Right Whales. We head back to Port Campbell for a hearty and well-earned dinner tonight.

Day 7 | Great Ocean Walk - The Gables to Twelve Apostles

Our final day on the Great Ocean Walk trail.

We walk our way to the Apostles from the Gables via Wreck Beach and possible tidal crossings to Devils Kitchen. A great chance for bird spotting today especially by the Princetown river mouth.

As well, first glimpses of the famed 12 Apostles as we approach the Port Campbell National Park.

A fabulous achievement and one to celebrate this evening with our team.

Day 8 | Drive to Adelaide

We drive via the Apostles one last time before making our way back to Adelaide via Portland, Mt Gambier and the stunning Coorong.

With comfort stops and lunch enroute there will plenty of chances to stretch the legs regularly and tour the bakeries in country South Australia. We will arrive back into Adelaide in the evening at approximately 7pm.

  • Water bottles/hydration kit (min 3Ltrs)

  • Clothing suitable for bushwalking that is quick drying, warm layers if chilly – consider merino/synthetic clothing
  • Sun protection such as hat, sunglasses and suncream, insect repellent (if joining us in warmer months consider a head net for the flies)
  • Sleeping attire
  • Sleeping bag (we can provide or you can bring your own) for 1 night in Nelson

Fitness Requirement

  • A good level of fitness is required to walk the trails on this trip
  • You will be walking pack free (day packs only)
  • You will walk on a variety of surfaces including undulating trails, rocky paths and soft sand
  • Our longest walking day is 22km on hilly trails and we walk 7 consecutive days on this adventure
  • Shorter distances will be offered where possible
  • Trail rating: Moderate to Challenging

  • Note weather, group member welfare and a range of circumstances outside our control can mean last minute changes to our itinerary are necessary once on tour
  • A limited number of single rooms are available on a first-come basis
  • Please contact us before booking any flights. Depending on flight arrival and departure times extra nights accommodation may be required at own expense
  • A minimum of 6 travellers are required for this trip to depart. If minimum numbers aren’t reached, we may decide to still go or we will provide a full refund
  • If this trip departs during Fire Ban Season – last minute changes to our itinerary or walking days may be required for safety reasons

  • Private transport to and from Apollo Bay is included from Adelaide, with multiple pick up points available in transit between Adelaide and Nelson

Adventure Leaders

Our team is qualified, experienced and super friendly. We will ensure you have a fun and connecting adventure. Leaders are certified in Remote or Wilderness First-Aid. All leaders carry a group first-aid kit, emergency communications device, emergency documentation and equipment.
