Overview

Kids Adventure in Deep Creek for all ages and genders

Guided hike and camping

Stronger Kids welcomes children of all ages and all genders with their caregivers for an experience in Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri Country.

Restore trust in nature while encouraging resilience and mindfulness during this overnight hiking and camping experience.

This kid’s adventure in Deep Creek offers a weekend of discovery. Designed around nature immersion and connection, it is a terrific opportunity for children to gain practical knowledge and enhanced awareness of the present moment. Appropriate to their age, height and weight, they feel the responsibility of carrying their own gear in a safe and supported environment.

It is also a wonderful chance to bond with each other, meet new friends, learn new skills, and share the outdoors with positive and inspiring adults.

Professionally led by our Big Heart Adventures Outdoor Leader. A qualified and experienced bushwalking leader alongside a junior peer mentor.

Age Guide for this Adventure:
Stronger Kids has some physically demanding trail walking each day (3-5 hours each day). We have a suggested age guide of 8-14 years however if your child is outside this suggested age range and you feel they can complete the walking distances and times involved, please contact us to discuss.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Welcome! Meet and hike to camping spot

We meet at Yankalilla for a briefing and coffee stop at 9.30am.  After introductions, we have our first immersion activity to bring our team together. This is also your last chance to buy a sandwich/roll for lunch later .

We will drive approximately 30 minutes to our start point. Note this road includes some unsealed (bumpy) sections yet is 2WD friendly. Before we head off on the trails we distribute gear, discuss the menu and food options, weigh our packs and adjust for comfort.  We ensure each child and adult is carrying a safe load according to their age/height/weight.  We may lunch here before we head off, OR enjoy it along the way at a comfortable spot.

Beginning with a steep descent, the trail takes us down onto a beach where Deep Creek meets the ocean. We may have to take our shoes off for the creek crossing here before continuing on with a steep climb. The tracks are well marked as we pass through pretty scrub and bushland to our campsite for the night. Our hiking distance is approximately 6km.

Upon reaching our campsite, we offload our gear and have a stretch. Your Big Heart leader will then demonstrate how to build an emergency shelter and the best way to pitch your tent. Once we are all set up we can enjoy an afternoon hot drink together while explaining how to operate a lightweight hiking stove and fuel. We encourage you to use your newly acquired knowledge and have a go at cooking your camp dinner later on. Some dessert and hot drinks (you can bring your own treats if you like) will be on offer too.

We have a few campsite activities and games planned while we relax and enjoy sharing funny adventure stories. We also take a moment for mindfulness where we can reflect on our day’s experiences!

Meals Included: Trail Snacks, Afternoon Tea, 2 Course Dinner
Walking Distance: 6km

Day 2 | Hike different trail back to starting point

After a restful night, we have freshly brewed coffee, tea, or hot chocolate to start the day. We prepare our muscles for another day on the trail with a morning stretch, followed by a mindfulness exercise and a 60-second meditation. Breakfast is prepared on the stoves provided.

Condensation or rain may have gathered on the tents overnight, so we give them the longest time possible to dry before packing them away. We aim to have our backpacks loaded and ready to hit the trails for our return journey by 9.00am. Today’s route includes a waterfall and another creek crossing with downhill and uphill sections along native bush trails.

Arriving back to our cars, we have time for a final stretch before unpacking our bags and equipment.

We offer a reflection activity as a group before heading home. There is also the option to meet in the town of Yankalilla for a choice of lunch spots.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Morning Tea, Trail Snacks
Walking Distance: 6km
