We respect the continuing connection to land, waters and culture by our First Nations peoples

Sustainability

We hold Eco Certification and we demonstrate this by reusing, recycling, and repurposing on all our trips and events.

We aim for low to no packaging where possible and compost all food scraps, tea bags and coffee grounds. We do not use single use plastics where possible.

Our operations are spread over a vast area to limit our impact on local environments. By offering a limited number of departures to each destination annually helps reduce our company footprint.

Our tour bus is cleaner for the environment with an engine that meets the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard.

The Big Heart Adventures office is insulated and fitted out to reduce environmental impact. Solar power is used during the day and skylights light our room. Also rainwater is collected and is used to water our produce garden.

Our produce garden includes a compost heap and worm farm. Organic waste from our trips and events feeds our compost and worms, which then provide the nutrients for our fruit and vegetables. Providing some of the yummy fresh food that our clients love.

We also safely pick up rubbish on all trails even if it is not ours. Our leaders carry rubbish bags and will clean the trails as they walk. We follow Leave-No-Trace principals but we like to think the environment gladly knows we have been through.

What we do on the trails

  • Walk in small groups
  • Pick up rubbish if safe and practical
  • Follow designated trails
  • Include connecting experiences
  • Educate and share our passion for the environment

What we do off the trails

  • Plan our trips and events with the environment in mind
  • Use solar power for our Big Heart office
  • Use rainwater for our Big Heart office produce garden
  • Recycle and compost our waste responsibly
  • Provide group transport to reduce vehicles on the road

How we keep improving

We weigh and record all our compost, recycling, and general waste. This is to help us fine tune our operations and improve our strategies in caring for the environment.

Compost 5-10Kg – average per multi-day trip
Recyclables 2-5Kg – average per multi-day trip
