Fly to NZ!

Once we have collected our bags from the luggage carousel in Wellington, we will be transferred to our hotel. As this is a longish travel day with an early start, we will be adjusting to a new time zone. We will have an opportunity to dine in at the hotel (own expense).

(Breakfast, Lunch)

After breakfast, we will go on a Zest Foodie “Capital Tastes Tour” allowing us to sample the local foods and beverages proudly Wellingtonian. Taste your way throughout the morning as well as orientate yourself to your surroundings before taking the rest of the afternoon to explore the city at your leisure. We have no plans for the rest of the day except to meet up for dinner at a local eatery (own expense).

(breakfast + tour tastings)

After a buffet breakfast we will enjoy a 10am morning cultural tour at Te Papa Museum with our local Maori guide. The Museum is approx. 5 min walk from our hotel. This tour will conclude by around 11am.

Today we will also make the crossing from North Island to South Island so we will return by 1pm to the hotel to collect our luggage and be transferred to the Wellington Ferry Terminal.

The Interislander Ferry offers exclusive entry to the Premium Lounge for a more comfortable crossing. A small buffet is available as well as cool drinks, beer, wine and WIFI.

The crossing will take around 3 and a half hours, this will be an ideal time to read, chat and enjoy the scenery as we head into the spectacular Sounds for sunset before our arrival in to Picton. Have your camera ready!

Our motel is a 15 minute walk from the ferry terminal however we will have our luggage collected by our hosts so we can wander freely and take our time before checking in to our accommodation.

Breakfast is not included in our stay here but a small supermarket is located nearby so you may stock up for the next morning or if you have forgotten any essential items for our trek, this is the last opportunity to make any last minute purchases.

Tonight we will have our pre-walk briefing ready for Day 1 on the Queen Charlotte Track tomorrow!

(Breakfast, Lunch)

Walking Day – Approximate walking time 5-6 hours – 14km – Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge.

After walking to the harbour, we will board a catamaran or water taxi in Picton and enjoy a 1 hour journey to Ship Cove – be on the lookout for dolphins! Ship Cove is the one place that Captain Cook visited five times to re-provision his ships. As we sweep into Ship Cove you will understand why.

A steady climb out of Ship Cove provides unsurpassed views to the North Island. We follow the track down into Resolution Bay and through to Endeavour Inlet where we spot Furneaux Lodge, our chalet accommodation, with its broad sweeping lawns. We enjoy a magnificent 3 course dinner tonight.

(Lunch, Dinner)

Walking Day – Approximate walking time 4 hours – 12.5km – Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove Resort.

As this is a shorter day of walking, Punga Cove can be reached before their rooms are ready for check-in. We can enjoy a leisurely morning once checked out of Furneaux, with optional side tracks on offer to extend the walking time.

This gentle coastal part of the track provides a good opportunity for us to enjoy a leisurely lunch and stop to enjoy the plentiful bird life along the way. Punga Cove Resort features individual chalets set amongst bush-clad hillside providing stunning views across the Endeavour Inlet. Enjoy the spa and solar heated pool. Views here from the bar at the jetty for a pre-dinner drink and the restaurant up top are sensational. We enjoy another magnificent 3 course dinner tonight.

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Walking Day – Approximate walking time 8-10 hours – 24.5km – Punga Cove Resort to Lochmara Lodge.

This section of the track is the most challenging but also the most rewarding. Climbing away steeply from Punga Cove, the stunning sweeping views being to appear as we walk along the ridge between the Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds. The track is undulating and can be challenging in the early half of the day.

One of the best lookouts today will be on offer – this will add a 45 minute walk to the day as a sidetrip but is absolutely worth it. Lochmara Lodge is located by boat a short distance from the Torea pier. We will be collected here by boat at 4.30pm and taken to our lodgings, offering chalet and hotel style accommodation. Again, a well earned 3 course dinner awaits us this evening.

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Rest day

Today is a great opportunity to recharge and reflect, enjoy a swim and some free time.

Lochmara Lodge has many facilities you may wish to make the most of but you may just want to pick one of the 40 odd hammocks on offer and soak it in. We finish our stay with a 3 course meal offering us all the energy we need for our final day of walking.

(Breakfast, Dinner)

Walking Day – Approximate walking time 7 hours – 20km – Lochmara to Anakiwa

The Queen Charlotte Track IS accessible from Lochmara Lodge, but rather than skip any sections we will return to our finish point by boat and head back up the hill to Torea Saddle. We have a few uphills on the ridge line and climb to the Track’s highest point of 407 metres. From the summit we will enjoy unsurpassed views into the surrounding Sounds.

Winding down to sea level we will encounter some particularly beautiful native bush reminding us of what must have been before humans arrived. The village of Anakiwa comes into view by mid afternoon and so does the end of our walk on the track. Water transport will collect us and transfer us to Picton at 4pm.

We will enjoy a celebratory dinner as a group at a nearby eatery (own expense).

Stay in Picton for two nights.

(Breakfast, Lunch)

Day of pamper

Today we have our optional day spa and winery lunch experience at Marlborough Day Spa and Alan Scott Winery for a 3 course lunch with a wine match followed by tea or coffee. We return to Picton later in the afternoon after being thoroughly pampered and spoilt. (own expense)

Your evening is at your leisure as we have no planned activities.

We will walk to the ferry terminal for our Interislander Ferry service back to Wellington in the Premium Lounge after, checking our bags through before boarding.

A meal will be served in the Premium Lounge for us and again we can enjoy the spoils of coffee, tea or something stronger and free WIFI. After our 3 and a half hour journey, we will be transferred from the ferry terminal in Wellington to our hotel. The rest of our afternoon is at leisure in Wellington. We will share our final dinner together (own expense) either along the waterfront or in the trendy inner city lane ways.

Overnight Wellington.

(Breakfast, Lunch)

This morning is our final day in New Zealand – so after breakfast head out to finish off any last moments you need before we fly home. It might be goodbye, but only for now……
